The Nonsensemakers revisits one of its most popular production, The Only One. The adapted version is a digital remake of ten excerpts from the original. Audiences are free to choose the sequence of the excerpts for an alternative viewing experience. The project also attempts to bring relief to theatre artists impacted by the pandemic.

The Nonsensemakers is an independent professional drama company in Hong Kong. Registered as a charity organisation in 2009 and funded by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council since 2014, the troupe has presented more than 100 productions and won an array of accolades from Hong Kong Drama Awards. The Nonsensemakers is now one of the most active troupes in Hong Kong.
Explore Multiple Storylines for The Only One
The Only One is based upon the ups and downs faced by ordinary couples. Through the various scenes, the creative team hopes that the audience will find resonances in their own situations and an outlet for pressure from everyday life through comedy.
When the play was first performed in 2018, the audience was invited to determine the sequence of scenes before each performance. The sequence would in turn affect the tone and development of the entire performance – it may be a tragedy on one night, but a comedy on another. The audience also got a taste of the infinite possibilities for each performance. This interactive nature of received tremendous support from the audience. The “hinge” factor and the consequences of choices formed the core of the story and what the scriptwriter wanted to impart on audiences.
The new online interactive version breaks down the play into ten scenes. Audience can decide the playing sequence of the scenes which will result in different storylines. Taking advantage of the online feature, audience can also experience the performance from an array of perspectives by repeated alteration of the playing sequence. As a result, they will be able to appreciate the relationship from multiple perspectives for a more thorough understanding of the characters. In addition, the online version will include subtitles and sign language translation to facilitate an inclusive watching experience for various audiences within the comfort of their homes.
