"Inter-PLAY"-An Interactive Experiment Between Dance and Video

Unlock Dancing Plaza

“Inter-PLAY”-An Interactive Experiment Between Dance and Video

Inter-PLAY is an interactive experimental discourse involving six artists, including three choreographers and three video-makers, with the purpose to recognize and deconstruct the dynamic relationship between the two art forms. Inter-PLAY is used to summarize their relationship as well as their final works presented to the audience. Apart from the amusement of oneself, “play” also refers to performance or the activation of a machine to produce sound or pictures. Moreover, it suggests the different states and roles of the initiative. Creators in this project are encouraged to embrace curiosity and a sense of playfulness in the journey of the unknown. In addition, “interplay” means exerting influence on each other. This implies an equal and fluid relationship within the team, so that there is room for everyone to learn and be inspired by fellow members.

Unlock Dancing Plaza

Unlock Dancing Plaza is a promising contemporary dance company founded in 2002, with Ong Yong Lock as Artistic Director and Joseph Lee as Associate Artistic Director since 2020. Unlock is committed to pursuing innovative breakthrough and theatrical liberation. These commitments are embodied and practised through its productions. The company focuses on reflecting dance upon the basis of the individual. Through defining dance with the uniqueness of the body and being freed from the institutionalised aesthetics of dance, Unlock strongly believes, “everyone can dance”.

Curating cross-media, cross-regional, and experimental projects, Unlock Body Lab discovers and shows the possibilities of dance in various forms. #danceless includes a series of creative works, performances and workshops which prioritise public participation as the main way of artistic practice. It encourages and deepens the diverse imagination of dance and facilitates the exchange between artists and the public through experiencing dance together.

Creating a new milieu for dance and videography

While a dance performance is constituted by physical space, time, and movements, the dissipation and restriction of live performances and venues have imposed challenges to choreographers. Not only does it change the way how dance-makers envision choreography, but also how the spectators perceive the two-dimensional video images of dance performances. A dance video straddles between video and dance, yet, it is not necessarily categorised nor defined by either genre. Only when it defines itself as a form that goes beyond both, could the new perspective of comprehension be recognised.

Inter-PLAY is an interactive experiment between dance and video involving six artists, including three choreographers and three video-makers, in an attempt to recognise and deconstruct the different relations between two forms. The final dance videos will be presented on an interactive website. By encouraging artists to step into spectators’ shoes to design and create a unique watching experience, the creative team wishes to provide a total experience that goes beyond the audio-visual sensation. The creative team strives to provide the viewers with unique experience of the works. In addition, the creators of the project will share their insights on their pieces in four sessions of public screenings and dance video workshops.
