Young Seagull

Fableist Ensemble

Young Seagull

Based on Chekhov’s The Seagull, the performance probes into the hopeless lives of four good for nothing “young no-hopers” and tries to find meaning among the shambles of affluence. The audience are invited to follow the protagonists’ real-time or scheduled interaction on social media and react accordingly. By choosing between the “thumbs-up” button or remaining on the sideline during the performance, the audience plays an important role in the denouement of the characters.

Fableist Ensemble

Established in 2017, Fableist Ensemble combines literature, technology, drama and international visions to create theatrical works infused with contemporary aesthetics. The company nurtures innovative and up-to-the-minute writers and performers through local and overseas performances, in which they perfect their crafts through practice. The creative team is also dedicated to creating provocative performances to unsettle theatrical conventions and to challenge the audience’s sensory experience.

The True Story on Social Media

There is a story behind every social media account. The story of Young Seagull begins with its eponymous Instagram account. Everyone’s social media habits are dissimilar, so do the stories each of us perceives. Followers of this account can become one of the “young no-hopers” to catch sight of the free bird, seagull.

The project ends with a live performance on Instagram, calling out for all “young no-hopers” to watch the real-time video performance collectively and experience on their phone screens the one and only true story.
